Filter Point Mattress - Technical Details
The concrete matt is formed by pump filling a sand: cement micro concrete into two layer Filter Point Mattress. The woven porous filters allow for efficient use in tidal conditions.
Standard Mattress FP150. Max. thickness 150 mm average thickness 100 mm, other mattress thickness' can be woven to special order up to FP300.

Wave Protection

FP Matts can be used efficiently against wave action where the porosity of the mattress is greater than that of the revetment material. This is the case for sands, silts and clays, see graph opposite. For other conditions refer to the Wallingford Guide.

Mattress Construction

Mattress panels are sewn together to form larger matts with "Ball & Socket" type shear joints. Zips are sewn in place to connect the sides of adjacent matts, also with "Ball & Socket" detail.

Mattress Installation

Mattress is laid out in position by divers where underwater and the top of the sloping mattress is restrained. Pump filling generally commences from the bottom upwards. Matt fabric weighs 0.5 kg/m² enabling matts of around 50 -100 m² to be easily handled.

When matts are filled underwater a 4 man dive team can install around 200 - 300 m² in a day. When installed in the dry, rates of up to 500 m² can be achieved, with a 4 man team, in a single day.

Bed Preparation

A significant advantage with using mattress is that there is no need for accurate bed preparation, unlike many other revetment systems. This is because the matt will follow the profile of the bed. However it is important to secure the edges of the mattress well, particularly at the toe of banks.
